If you go to bed every night and feel as though you are sleeping through the night only to end up tired, listless and yawning all day, you may have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a chronic condition where the sleeper pauses for seconds or even minutes while breathing, or breathing shallowly.

This interrupted breathing causes the sleeper to move from deep to light sleep, so the sleep is not as restorative as the body requires. This causes the sleeper to be at higher risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes and obesity, high blood pressure and even depression. A good night’s sleep is essential to good health.

Doctors often treat mild sleep apnea with several possible lifestyle changes:

–prescribing diet and exercise to decrease weight
–cessation of tobacco use
–lowering or avoiding alcohol use
–sleeping on the side instead of the back
–using allergy medications or nasal sprays to open the nasal passages

Another effective treatment option is wearing an oral appliance, or mouth guard while sleeping. This custom-fit appliance is created by your dentist or orthodontist, and is FDA approved. This device is created to adjust the lower jaw and tongue while you sleep to keep the airways open for optimal airflow. While typically used to treat mild and moderate sleep apnea, the device is also used for patients with severe sleep apnea who have tried using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, and have found they cannot tolerate it. The oral device is recommended for patients 18 and above.

Surgery is also a possible treatment for people with severe sleep apnea to expand breathing passages or even resetting the lower jaw.

Sleep apnea does not have to slow down or impede your quality of life. Check with Dr. Ramin Moradi to help you breathe easier and sleep again with the Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP) oral appliance therapy.
